Glass Ring Sizing Tips
Glass ring sizing is a little different from standard metal ring sizing, simply because their construction is different. Glass rings like the ones in our inventory are handcrafted and individually made; consequently, no two are exactly alike and no two have identical shape or weight. Likewise, you cannot expect perfect symmetry in a handcrafted glass ring, whether you buy from us or another site.
That being said, there are certain characteristics of one-piece construction glass rings that should be remembered when ordering:
- Because of their weight and the way it's distributed, these rings tend not to turn on the finger, even if you're wearing a size larger than you normally wear. These rings are also pretty bulky in size with fairly thick sides, which also helps in keeping your ring facing correctly when worn. In other words, if you're a perfect size 7 in a standard metal ring but have to ease it over your knuckle with care, odds are you should order a size 8. Remember, these rings have no 'give' to them and while a Sterling silver ring, for example, will conform its shape to your finger, a glass ring will simply break.
- The sizes stated on our site are close approximates but not exact. As mentioned before, each ring has a different shape and no handcrafted glass ring is symmetrically circle shaped. We have listed our ring sizes based on the supplier's specifications AFTER we've also confirmed them to the best of our ability using our own ring sizers.
Glass Ring Care
This may fall under the category of 'Stating the Obvious' but here it goes: Glass breaks.
- These rings aren't necessarily overly fragile but yes, they will chip, crack and break outright if you smack them on something too hard. So be gentle with your ring. If your fingers are a little swollen in the morning but fine by noon, put a little lotion on your finger to help slide your ring on if it's a little stubborn in the AM. And if it doesn't fit, don't force it! Consider wearing your ring on your other hand or an alternate finger.
- Take your ring off before performing any activities that may put excessive pressure on the bottom of the band (the thinnest and most vulnerable portion of the ring). Don't be paranoid: These rings will be just fine with 99% of your routine, daily activities. But if you're going to be doing things like lifting heavy boxes, mowing the lawn or using a jackhammer, take the ring off! It can't be expected - actually NO ring can really be expected - to survive such activities unscathed. Even 14k gold rings can break. I know 'cause I've broken one!
- Care should be taken to remove your ring prior to immersing your hands in water or other liquid, simply because the lubrication that water or other liquid provides will increase the odds of your ring sliding off unintentionally. And a glass ring hitting the shower floor from a height of three or four feet can result in damaged or breakage.
- Clean your ring as you would any other glass that you cherish: With warm water and mild dish washing liquid. Don't use cleaners with caustic chemicals unless you are absolutely certain that it won't mar the ring's finish. But don't be afraid to scrub away at your ring with a sponge or soft toothbrush. The design on your ring is fused into the glass itself and will not be damaged by water or mild soap.
